I've been putting off buying a D50 for like a year now because I haven't had a lot of money. Should I bother with the kit lens? I know I mainly want to work with telephoto, so should I just spring for a tele lens right off the bat? :dunno: Any recommendations on that?

Also, where should I buy it from? I don't think B&H has just the D40 body. :noes:

get a D50. D40 sucks. no body drive motor some some lenses wont work with it. D50 + tamron 28-75 or tamron 17-50 should fit the bill nicely.

im sick of everyone saying the D40 sucks just because there is no body drive motor. I dont miss it 1 bit.

I'm aware the D40 has no body drive motor, but from everything I've read it suits me better than the D50. I wanted something smaller, lighter, cheaper, and easier for a beginner to use. I've done some film SLR work but this is my first jump into digital.

The drive motor definitely makes a big difference if you plan on using primes like the 50mm. It really does limit your lens choice, as well as forcing you to buy more expensive AFS versions of non-AFS lenses.

Yeah, there's a 10mp version out, but I won't be needing anything more than 6mp. :dunno: Do you guys really think I should go for a D50? Where can I look at buying just the body? B&H doesn't carry them any longer.

The D40 is the DSLR for someone who doesn't want a DSLR.

Get the d50, or go up to the d80. Hell, look out for a lightly used d70.

The 18-55 is not worth owning. No matter what you buy, stay away from that lens at all costs.

So where can I buy a new D50? Or do I have to resort to ebay?

D40 is a waste. Get the D50 if you are going for entry level Nikon SLR. If you're going Canon get XT/XTi.

Don't make the D50 anymore, but you might find a few 'as new' re-conned on ebay.

It doesn't matter if you don't think you need the body motor drive. You'll be so annoyed that you can't use the majority of lenses available, because they all require a body mounted motor drive.

Just don't touch D40, the only options if you want to progress in photography are the D50, the Canon 400D (believe it is the XTi in the US) or the D80 at a push.
