So my 250gb external hd shows 232gb free

    and its formatted in ms fat32. should i format it for osx or a different way? will it get any more space back?

    Just let it be. Its formatted so it works on both Windows and Mac. If you format it for OSX only, you won't be able to use it on Win platforms and that can be disadvantage. Also, you won't save that much space anyways.

    That sounds consistant for a formatted 250gb drive, considering you'll never see the full advertised capacity of any hdd

    my 200 gig drives show up as 186.19gig, so sounds about right.

    i understand the size thing, it was more of the formatting i was curious about. i just left it alone

    the formatting wont change the amount of free space, at least night by a significant amount...
