His guide on the d90 was great. It explained a lot the regular manual did not.

    Then I read this gem...

    What the hell?

He has this tendency to speak in absolutes when he describes things that are true most or some of the time.

whatever else I think of him, he's a marketing genius at driving clicks to his site.

    It's a predictable pattern:

    He makes outrageous statement X.
Hordes rush on over to read his "bullshit"
Some people even argue over it.
    Ken's an idiot, Ken's a genius, Ken's an idiot, Ken's a genius...etc
More people rush to read it for themselves.
And he's soaking up all the clicks and cashing in....

    Genius. Just not at photography.

He speaks in generalities like absolutes sometimes.

Actually, if you really read what he wrote. for 90% of people out there, what he speaks is the truth. For what most people are doing with their cameras, the camera can choose just as good a setting as the person can, if not better and as long as you understand HOW the camera is choosing those settings, you can make small adjustments and get exactly what you want.

There are of course specific times you want specific things and need to have control, but for the most part, what he said is not far off the truth.

BTW, this in no way endorses many of the other crap he has spouted off, but in this case I wanted to defend the statement to a point.

He has an opinion just like anyone. He's very knowledgeable but speaks in absolutes just like everyone here says.

I agree and disagree with a lot of what he says but I find all of it still informative and read most if not all his stuff.

Ken Rockwell has a lot of good information. His website is clear-formatted, fast, and has good pictures of the products. He has info and reviews of ton of lenses\cameras, and a bunch of tutorials\how-to. All for free, you don't have to pay shit, unlike the people who run other websites (SUCH AS THIS ONE WHICH YOU PAY FOR), you don't even have to click his referral links.

So what you're saying is that Ken doesn't really speak for the professional, or serious hobbyist, but for the average Joe Blow. What he was quoted as stating in the first post would seem to be very true for your regular guy that bought something high(er) end so he can get closeups of his kids' basketball game; though completely ludicrous to anyone that resembles the OTAP crew.

He is a consumer's best go to person. Sadly, he is. The problem happens when people take everything he has to say as fact. People...one persons opinion does not make it fact. Please, become more informed before making decisions.

Well, in the way he is speaking, you actually do have to know what you're doing to work even in program the way he suggests. After all, you have to understand how the light meter is working, how the colors in the frame are affecting it, how any glare or shadows or backlighting, etc are all affecting the exposure.

So, no, its not necessarily for the amateur because you still need to know what is going on in the camera and how the camera is coming up with the exposure it is.

But, even as a professional, there are many times where you can simply just use that mode and make your adjustments based on what you know.

If a program exposure is giving you an exposure of 1/60 and f/16 at the beach on white sand, you can easily adjust the exposure with just compensation if you want to adjust for the bright sand, OR, you can adjust the shutter or aperture to get the exposure you want, while still in program mode.

Its actually a fairly intricate way of working that requires knowledge to make it work.

Again, not saying that is what you should do, just saying its a perfectly valid way of shooting if you know what you're doing and want to work that way.

BTW, auto ISO is not a bad feature at all, it uses the lowest one that will work for the exposure you set. Not a bad safety net in case you end up in some darker light than you thought but still want to keep your aperture and shutter that you have set.

I often use autoISO, unless i'm intending to throw my gear on a tripod :dunno:

as far as the rest... all it takes is a quick RTFM for even the amateur shooter to understand what Chuck Rockwell means by metering. :hs:
