I was looking at the Nikon D40, Canon XTi, Canon XSi, Nikon D80, and Canon 40D.

I made a spreadsheet (I can post it later from my regular computer if you guys want) comparing the major features of each and the price.

    Prices new from Amazon were...

D40: $490 (with kit lens, which I don't want nor do I want to spend time selling)
    XTi: $550
    XSi: $800
    D80: $750
    40D: $960ish (after 200 rebate)

I originally wanted the D40, but seeing as how the XTi has a lot more going for it at only $60 more, it made more sense to get the XTi.

If I were going to spend any more money, I wouldn't bother spending it on the XSi or the D80...rather I'd jump straight to the 40D because the difference between the XTi and the XSi/D80 isn't enough to justify the price, but the jump up to the 40D would be worth the price. Makes sense right?

I figure I'll go with the XTi now with a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and upgrade to the 40D (or 50D if it is out by then) once I grow out of the XTi.

I love my XTi, dont waste your time with the kit lens, I wish I took others advice and bought the tamron over the kit (but I was dead broke when i bought mine :) )

You forgot the D40x, which you can get body only without a kit lens.

I would recommend actually holding the cameras before you buy them. A lot of people prefer the feel of one over the other.

Other than that your logic seems fine.

don't forget the used market, 20d or 30d could be a good choice

I prefer the way the XTi body feels in my hand over the D40, so I'm good in that aspect.

Since it's a wedding gift from my fiance to me she prefers to buy me something new. However...

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-8-2MP-D...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1211161514&sr=8-1

$750 shipped for a brand new one. Is it worth the extra $200 over the XTi? What are the main benefits of the 30D over the XTi?

Edit: I found one that was sold (brand new body only) for $485...too bad that was the only one.

New D80 would be the same price as a new 30D. I prefer the ergonomics of Canon DSLR's :dunno:

14 bit raw on the 40D is pretty damn good.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the entry level bodies. A used 20D or 30D > those

For ~ $940, the 40D would be a good bargain with the rebates going around.

I have the XTi and my friend has the 40D, I preferred the smaller body of the XTi and the feel, also, between the two of us I could not see a considerable difference in the picture quality with the same lens :dunno:

That's what I think I'll do...just need to make sure my fiance understands that I will, with almost certainty, be selling the wedding gift she gives me later on.
