So it is not possible to lose fat & gain muscle at same time?

I saw this post in the main OT forum:

Quick background: I'm eating much cleaner than I ever have and I believe over the last few weeks I have lost some weight. I have also been going to the gym much more often and lifting more.

Is it correct that despite my efforts, I cannot gain muscle and lose fat at the same time? I am not new, I have been casually lifting for about the past 2 years, twice a week or so.

If that is so, I'm not sure what I am to do. Spring is here, I don't want to turn into a fat ass, but at the same time, I'd like to see growth in certain areas like my shoulders.

    Advice?

if you read the stickies you'd see the little part about if you are a n00b that you can do both(gain muscle/lose fat) also if you're on roids

it's possible, but slow going. not the best way to make gains. it's just easier to gain a ton of fat/muscle. then cut the fat and remain with muscle.

    For fuck's sake.

To gain weight takes a caloric surplus
To lose weight takes a caloris deficit

    ummm....

2+2=____???? SHIT THIS ONE IS HARD.

Unless you're on steroids or just started lifting.

what advantages does a 'noob' have over someone working out for 1 year, if both people are at the same lbm and BF and height? because lets say the person working out for 1 year has caught up to the 'noob' size-wise.

Would a low cal/high protein diet decrease muscle loss?

I'm on around 2200 (give or take 200) cals a day and around 160g of protein (until I phase in another 30g protein shake)...

If you think about it, it is possible. Let's say you are 300lbs with 30% bf. And lets say that you theoretically ate exactly maintenance calories every day. If you are losing fat that fat is going towards energy in the body. Therefore some of the calories taken in every day can be used for muscle growth. Therefore it is possible, but not easy nor efficient.

If you are eating maintenance, how are you losing fat though?

    100 calories less than maintenance...

or maybe by maintenance he means if you laid in bed all day and did no physical activities whatsoever.

i would think this would be possible until under 10% BF, maybe even lower, except the relocation is ALOT lower under 10% or so

what I mean is, if you are eating at exactly maintenance, your body has no reason to oxidize fat for fuel. The only way I can see this working is to alter/enhance nutrient partitioning through ephedrine or other drugs. Even then though, the effect should be small at best.

yea, so eat 500 or so less than maintenance. i would guess the less deficit you eat, the more muscle you would maintain, except that the fat would come off alot slower.

generally, that is the best idea. Lbm protection (provided protein is high enough), easier to stick to, teaches positive eating habits, much less likely to regain the weight, hunger/metabolism/hormone levels are less affected, etc
