So is there REALLY a problem with the Subaru WRX 5sp tranny?

I keep hearing that there are problems with it, glasstranny and problems with the 1st and 2nd gears.

Is there any truth to this? Or is it just dumb ricers dumping their clutch at 6000rpm? AWD will put ALOT more strain on the tranny if you don't know how to drive it, it will transfer all the stress of the driveline into the tranny instead of spinning tires, so I'm thinking this is the problem, people can't drive.

But...if there is an actual problem with the 5sp, does the 6sp in the STi solve it?

No, in reality there isnt. Just a problem with the 17 year old drivers who get a new turbo AWD car and drops the clutch from 6k rpm at every light.

    Yes and no.

Mostly the problem is dumbasses abusing an AWD tranny. However, even with perfect use, it doesn't like to go back to 1st gear unless it's stopped, and after time it will grind. Also, it will not hold over a certain amount of HP, generally considered 350 AWHP.

Teh STi 6 spd is both strogner and has better synchros.

It's meant to withstand stock power, and people who don't drive like fuckasses. If you mod for big power, and/or drive like a fuckass, expect to need a new tranny. It's still a bit fucky when it comes to getting into reverse and first gears sometimes, but that's pretty minor.

The STI 6speed should be much beefier.

i have 60,000 miles on my transimission and it hasn't given me any duribility problems.

the only Real issue is that some trannies have clutch shudder when the car is cold

350 AWHP? That's alot considering that the WRX has stock.

As far as mods, I would like to do a full TBE, uppipe and accessport ECU, maybe a *little* more like a boost controller to raise the boost a couple psi and an STi intercooler or something, but that would be it.

I don't drive like a moron or anything, I'm just trying to decide between this and an STi, if the extra money is worth it. I could do the TBE + uppipe + accessport ECU and be at STi performance, right? Then the intercooler and boost controller would probably allow me to hit low low 13s/high 12s, which is my goal, STi or not. So it's either mod the Sti slightly to get there or just do basics on the WRX.

It used to be ~300 AWHP, but my roommate's pushed around 289 w/ 80k on the clock, so i'd say it's a little higher than that.

New for new, I'd say that the STi is well worth the money. Used to Used, i'd go w/ an early model WRX over a slightly used/new STi

If you're just gonna drag race it, why not get something that's built with that in mind?

a good friend of mine had one.

hes a competent driver and never modded his.

1st gear syncros went out with like 10k miles.

it was bone stock, but he autocrossed it...

but hes never had any problems autocrossing his old civic si, his wife's old MR2, or his wife's current miata

only the WRX had tranny problems...

I give good odds he was trying to get it into first gear whilst autocrossing. If not, well, shit happens.

You cant expect to bash on automobile parts and expect them not to break.

Because I want 4 doors and if I wanted a drag racer I would pick up a Camaro. You probably didn't realize that 1/4 mile numbers are a good measure of acceleration and comparison between other cars, did you? You probably also didn't realize that I have never been to a drag racing track, even when I had my AWD Eclipse turbo, did you? You probably also didn't realize that I don't want to be spending thousands on tranny rebuilds from all the AWD dumps at the track when I could have just picked up a good RWD car and put ET Streets on it, did you?

BTW, this is new for new, I'm trading in my MR-S for something larger, just trying to decide on an 04 STi or 05 WRX, if I'm prepared to pay the extra for an STi, I've driven both and love them both, although they aren't nearly as fun as my current car in the curves. I need something with more than 0.7 cubic feet of cargo room for college. :)

While this is true, the thread is about inherent design flaws in the 5sp WRX tranny, I think we all realize that if you abuse anything, especially the tranny on an AWD car, it will break.

But thank you for the extremely valid point.

Okay, that's what I need to know. I drove my GSX for 9 months with probably one high rpm drop, and even then I slipped the clutch pretty good. Of course, out of the 9 months with the DSM, it spend 4 in my driveway on jackstands. :mamoru:

So, no, I will probably never drag my WRX or even drop the clutch at such a high rpm.
