I got an email from my wife today saying how her younger brother is joining the Army after he graduates high school. He was promised a slot in special forces and green berets. On completion of his training they said he would recieve E5. Does this sound right at all? My wife said she read the contract and thats what it said. Not a bad deal if his recruiter is not jerking him around, just sounds odd that they would promise E5 after training.

That is only if he makes it into SF. Very few that try actually make it.

:werd: Especially those that are straight out of high school and have no clue what is in store for them.

Didn't they enlist some soldiers directly into the NCO corps around Vietnam?

its the 18xray program, and from what my buddy tells me, its a pretty big success
basically, you take a kid of the street thats already in good shape, send him through basic, Infantry school, Airborne school, SFAS and then his Q course.
according to my buddy, they are in phenomenol shape. My friend passed SFAS, and he said that almost every single 18X soldier was flying by him when they were running with their rucksacks on. The only thing they lack is maturity and a real understanding of how the army works. He also told me that most of the shitbags get peered out at the end of SFAS, if they make it, so things have a way of working out.
The ones that fail any part of their training become 11Bs, get sent to an Inf unit, and stay Privates.

The way the rank works is you come in as an E3 unless you have a degree. After a 1 yr of being in the army and the course you get your E4 as long your cadre turns the paperwork in. Upon completion of all the phases you are awared your 18 Series MOS, Special Forces Tab, Green Beret, Yarbourgh Knife and you can pin on E5-SGT rank.

    Butter Bar of poop!

To get to Ranger Battalion its 3 weeks. Ranger school is 62days I belive if you attend that later on.

The 18X program is right around 2yrs from Basic training to completion. It can easily be longer if you have to wait for phases or get recycled. The 18D Medic course for Phase 3 takes almost a yr in itself so the course is more like 3yrs.
