katanas blow. old old OLD technology. the katanas made now are basically the same technology as the 1992 model, which at the time was still behind performance-wise.

    slow, horrible feel, heavy. blah.

for 3200 you can get a nice cbr f3

for the average rider, the katana is fine. i rode a 600 for a starter, i was pleased with it. great gas milage, no need to worry about flipping the front end, easy to maintain/work on, katana forums are very friendly also.

start with a range of bikes, then get quotes from insurance companies, then weed out the high upkeep ones.

for example, american family wouldn't even cover me on the kat, but state farm quoted me $500/year, since they only go by engine sizes. prog, geic, and those other highly advertised "moto friendly" insurance firms was quoting me near $1k+

except when you live in a town where most people dont ride sportbikes you dont have the luxury of having a wide variety

for sportbikes I've ridden (in order) nighthawk 750 (not that it's a sportbike but it's more sporty than what I have now), ninja 600, gsxr 750, VFR 800, and a CBR 600.

of those the CBR 600 (IMO) was head-and-shoulders above the others. again, that's my opinion... it rode well, I fit well (I'm 6'3"/220), it had more than enough power, it was comfortable. The others had some of those but not all.

my problem is that nobody around here rides sportbikes they all ride harleys...and while i like cruisers...right now thats not what i want so its making it about 10x more diffucult to find a used sportsbike thats not expensive as all hell

it's worth driving a few hundred miles to have a better selection, and you're going to save money so it'll be worth the gas for the trip.

grab a buddy, drive to philly... 4.5 hours drive round trip, a few hours to dick around looking at bikes. make a day of it.
