anyone want to help me with getting it to work low mem? i've got 4mb ram.
Which distro and version? You certainly won't want to install X, plus you'll want to turn off just about every service you can.
well. i'm trying for debian... but i can't make it work on low memory. it wants an init= option. i'm using the rescue disk to boot into lowmemrd as the root.
Aarrgh!! Help Me!!
you can use bbc linux
that uses a VERY SMALL footprint.
I had RH v5.0 running on a 486DX 40Mhz box. I think it had 8 or 16mb of RAM at one time and then I bumped it up to 64mb. You can run X, but plan on having some other things to do while you try to load it and use it. Apache + PHP + MySQL will work nicely as well as Samba (assuming the box isn't being hammered by more then a few users).
gentoo can run on pretty much anything...
