    Depends what you like.

    I usually go to:
    Crissy Field/Palace of Fine Arts
    The Embarcadero
    Fisherman's Wharf
    Japan Town
    Ocean Beach
The park across the Golden Gate bridge

I'd like to go back to SF now that I'm somewhat knowledgeable about photography and have a DSLR.

There's no security when entering the gate.

If you're over near Crissy Field and the GGB you can also stop off at the Exploratorium. There's some cool buildings and a little pond/park to shoot.

I'd also make a trip over to North Beach to get some pictures of Coit tower, and North Beach is also right next to Chinatown.

Haight/Ashbury also has a lot of interesting people watching and stores/shops.

 I guess growing up in the area and taking school fieldtrips there, it was easier to get little kids excited about museums if you call it the Exploratorium than the Palace of Fine Arts.

I was over there a couple months ago taking pictures and they have a TON of construction going on. It'll be fun to get back over there when they are all done.

It's still interesting and you can get some good shots, but some of the main buildings have scaffolding on them. If you are walking over to the GGB though it's just across the street, you don't really have to make a separate trip.
