So I'm building a new computer. I've got a friend to help me on this - its the first I've built.

    -----------------------------------
    >Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Boxed PC800 Socket PGA478, 512KB cache
    >Abit IC7-G Mainboard for S478/800mhz I875P,SATA,ATX,GbLAN,Dual-DDR,1394,Raid
    >Corsair TWINX1024-3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB Kit w/two matched CMX512-3200 DIMMs
    >Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis PRO 128MB, AGP,ATI9800PRO, 128bit,DVI-I,TV-Out, Lit
    >Chieftec BX Tower with door, Black Case with 360W. BX-03B-B-B P4 / AMD
    >Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB S-ATA 8MB cache 7200RPM
    >NEC DVD-recorder ND-2500 IDE black OEM DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW
    -----------------------------------

Its off an Irish site so the selection probably isn't as great as say Newegg, but its the Pentium 4 I have a question about.

He said to get the Pentium 4 but I've heard good things about the AMD 64. The AMD64 3200+ is about 20 euros cheaper, so Im just wondering if I should go with that?

Sorry this is long, but I'm clueless with motherboards so could someone reccomend one for the AMD?

    Thanks.

Edit: Its basically for gaming. Will be used for college too though.

if youre buying a gaming machine, the athlon 64 is what you want. amd just released 4 new chips too, so the prices for the 3200 64 chip might come down a bit.

everything else on your list looks perfect, you've built what i would build..except you need to change it to an athlon 64 with an nvidia 3 250gb motherboard

the mobo will be considerably more as well if price is what u have in mind. But yes the AMD's have the P4's by the ballz when it comes to gaming.

Cheers guys. I have the Athlon 64 3200+ included now. Still unsure about the mainboard I have the Abit KV8-MAX3 picked out at the moment. I read a review on it on anandtec.com and seemed to be pretty good.

And other suggestiosns to look out for?

I presume the AMD won't require me to change the Ram or anything else? I've never built before heh...
