me: its one of their autos
older employee: oh, no we dont carry any kind of knives like that
me: oh really? why not? is that some sort of company policy or something?
older employee: yeah, we try not to push things like that around here.

Only a criminal would want a knife like that.

I thought Autos were only for sale to LEO in TN? Not saying that's going to stop anyone, but still.

Benchmade does not distribute their autos to many retailers. To buy directly from them it has to be on LEO department letterhead, consquently they do not sell to mass dealers. The only places you can find them are smaller shops, and many of them only deal in state to prevent legal issues with shipping and keeping track of laws.

The smokey mountain knife works has a sign right above their case of autos. Maybe it's just their policy though. The bass pro shop here sells benchmade auto's, I'll ask them if the sell to civilians next time I'm in there.

My favorite for autos is the collectible edge, but they are not online (owner refuses to) so it is phone order only. They carry CRK and Microtech mostly, but can get alot of others.

There is another shop in GA that is good, but I will have to pull out the cards to find out which one it was. The have all the benchmades.

I don't honestly have a use for auto openers besides the fact that they are cool to add to the collection. I can open any of my kershaw's as fast as I can open my benchmade 9050.

Last time I was at a gunshow, I asked a dealer about his many automatic knifes, and he said that every automatic knife he carried would constitute a "problem" if you were caught with one under questionable circumstances by the law. They're basicly not legal to own in Texas from what I gathered. Funny that cops were one of his big customers for the cheaper automatic knives.

Anyone know if I can carry my Auto knife in TN? My kershaw is getting to the point that it doesn't hold an edge very well. Might just pick up a Tanto blur though

I was standing there :mamoru: ing the whole time.

We also spent a good 45 minutes in the gun section playing with various 1911's (the Taurus PT1911 feels surprisngly nice), some Baby Eagles (slide release is so far out of comfortable reach I had to turn the gun sideways in my hand to get it), and a Remington 870 Express Magnum (8 shot capacity :naughty: ), among other things..

Another good line was when the guy behind the gun counter who was playing gopher while we kept wanting to touch everything we saw looks at us and says, "So.. what branch of service you guys in?"

We looked at each other, and I immediately thought it was because of my dogtag I wear (my grandfather's).. so I just looked up and said, "None.. my old man's tag."

He then shakes his head and says, "Nah, it's just you guys are so.. thorough.. you're checking out everything on these guns. Usually the only people who do that are military or police."

:dunno: Sorry.. didn't realize that us normal folk shouldn't thoroughly examine our firearms.

Nah, I'm sure they were unnerved enough at the fact that there were two 20 somethings standing there in nice clothes handling firearms like it was second nature, and talking them like it was a long-lost second language.

Overall, they were cool with us and everything, but I couldn't help but feel they were uneasy or something. It was strange, but I just ignored it because I was busy checking out the guns.

Why an auto? If you like the look of that piece, benchmade makes plenty that look like it that won't give you trouble. I love my 942S.
