Does anyone know of a good way to go about doing this? Or has anyone done it? I found some interesting information via google but it seemed like it would be a good idea to ask here anyway.

    Soft leather, or hard leather?
If you can ask a more precise question, that would help us.

I was thinking of more or less starting with some inexpensive material as I learn things. The first couple that I make wold most likely be just for show, so I would not really have to worry about it being useable.

    Pleather + sewing machine
Depending on your fetish, a rivet gun.

    So what type of toy?
    Cat-o-nine tails
    Bullwhip
    Riding Crop
    etc

Could you list the sites you've found? I've made a few whips, but nothing too exciting. I also got a new whip and noticed it was made with horse hair, so I'm not to sure if that should be used or not.

I used soft leather and it was really easy to work with.

    :dunno:

It seems that a cat o'9 would just require a nine-strand braid, possibly around a small piece of dowel for stability, and then just stop braiding when you're ready to switch from handle part to whip part. You could just do a few whip-stitches around the end of then handle to hold the braid in place at the base of the handle.

It should be done with all leather. Having a dowel core is cheating IMO.

It is kinda cheating, but it's great to give you an idea how to make a whip. We have one that has a dowel core and the strands are a pleather with round grommets through it (which you can buy in spools from a wal-mart or fabric shop pre-made) and it made a great whip. It's held together with small tacks and is actually very sturdy. I'll try and find it and post a pic :)

Awesome... Quick question though, how did you attach the 'tails' bit to the handle?

I use furniture nails. First I wrap the handle and leave about 1/4 of it bare. Then I secure the tail bits all the way around the top there so they have something to anchor to, then I finish wrapping and make sure it's all secure with furniture tack/nails. It's actually very strong, we used that one for about 30 minutes constant, and overall about 2 hours. Not a single problem. Our other one (wherever it may be) is much better, the 'tails' bit is much longer, same concept with the eyelets and wrapped with better material also. Bit bigger too. If I ever find it, I'll dig up this topic and post it :)
