so i was an idiot while taking apart my PC

Discussion in 'OT Technology' started by BoostedBoogie, Aug 31, 2007.

  1. just bought a desktop custom built by someone and am taking it apart to reuse some old parts and put in a different case. this is the first time building a pc but i've had plenty of electronics experience and handling computer parts, so i figure it's no big deal.

well i assumed that the ports where the usb, microphone, headphone, and power/reset wires plug into were big plugs. when i pull it off the mobo, each wire is it's own plug, and i have no damn idea where each wire goes. the usb/power/reset are pretty self-explanatory since they are pretty much labelled on the mobo itself, but i'm pretty much screwed with the rest of the wires.

    any advice is appreciated :dunno:

The motherboard usually has the abreviations of what each pin is for, right next to each pin.

You only really need to worry about power and reset.

The wires will also be marked on the plug.

If you can get some good light in there, you should be able to read everything.

And you don't need to worry about which of the two motherboard pins is positve or negative for each switch.

If they're not labeled on the motherboard, you could download the user manual from the manufacturer's website. It should contain the details of the pin assignments.

  5. sweet thanks guys. i guess i won't have to worry about it too much until i get the new case with the fresh wires anyway, which i just realized :o

Just make sure you don't plug firewire into USB. You'll fry the motherboard if you ever use the port.

Just get a case with solid plugs for the headers instead of the individual plugs for each wire. It will make your life easier.

87 is NOTHING. We've been high '90s... and even that is mild compared to the 110s of last year.

And learn something about how subnets work :mamoru:

    And IP addressing in general.

    And some math.
