So I wanted a spot today...

    to test out my 1RM today, and asked this dude who seems like he knows a thing or two to spot me. maybe i should have mentioned NOT to help unless i struggle or become stagnant for 3 seconds or so, but shouldn't that be assumed? so he helps me lift off, and as i'm going down, i feel him lifting it a little, like i couldn't manage the weight. as i push up, he lifts it a pretty good amount as well.

    do you guys specifically tell a spotter not to touch the weight until you obviously struggle?

    I tell people to let it crush me before they touch it but even then some people will help if I struggle

    i tell them if i get stuck for more than 3 seconds to help me

    next time, ask them to wait til the bar is drifting down then spot you or when you say "spot" or something.

    I generally tell them if I stay level for 3 seconds of it starts coming back down then start helping a bit.

    I always tell the person "just grunt something when you want me to grab it off you." I expect the same in return.

    I don't touch the bar. Only if he is having trouble. I don't yell at em either for motivation. I am a horrible spotter. If I see someone with "that look" were he is going to ask me for a spot I try and ignore him. :mamoru:

    Eh. I don't dislike lifting with any of my gym buddies, but I'm in there a helluva lot longer when I lift with a partner. I'd rather go in, do my thing, and get out. No need to spend all evening at the gym.

    1 partner is good.. 3-4 dudes is just annoying.

    with one other person, it's the perfect rest time while they do their set.. so in theory, it shouldnt take any longer than a workout by yourself.

    I manage to end up there at least an hour and a half when it's me and another guy versus my 45 minutes - 1 hour when it's just me. :dunno:

    Either way, I'll take lifting by myself with headphones on.

    Says who? I wait 5-10 minutes between my heaviest sets. I agree with you for supplemental exercises though.

    Yeah, I dont mean between max attempts and PL'ing type stuff.. I'm talking typical get in the gym, do your workout and leave, type training.

    actually 3 seconds is pretty long. i guess i should just say don't touch the bar til i say spot. it was 205lbs btw, and the dude made it feel like 150lbs.

    :mad: That happened to me today. I was just trying to see how many times I could bench 225, and the fucker wouldn't take his hands off the bar even after I said "I'm okay, I got this." I did 5 and stopped, he was making it feel like 185lbs at best.
