well, if you compare it to the base config Mac Pro, you are actually off since you have 4Gb and the base MP has 2Gb. adding the additional 2Gb to match your config makes a difference of $700, though you still have to buy an OS. Vista Ultimate 32-bit is $170. So, for a difference of $530 (give or take) you can build a MP replica.

Don't forget that Steve's os is only $100.

And even on a Mac you can add your own memory for less, no?

steve makes profit off the hardware and the software. MS can only make money off the software.

Steve is making more money off the software than Microsoft. Steve is ripping off his loyal customers $100+ for every major service pack(operating system upgrade for all of you mac pussies) every year.

I have upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5, and it was worth the $100.
I got a free version of Vista and have uninstalled it. I don't even want that shit if it is legit and free.

I'll gladly pay for "major service packs" if they actually add features that I want without fucking up the rest of the system.

:ugh: Does M$ release functionally with Service Packs? No they just fix issues that were there in the first place.

Not true. The average user doesn't know anything about these things and usually keep them running. This is a good thing as they would have had nothing otherwise.

Granted, I'm sure everyone in C&P has them turned off.

Windows firewall is excellent. I use it. I wouldn't touch some of that other crap like blackice or norton.

Sometimes microsoft charges for "service packs" Windows 2003 R2 comes to mind, while for regular server that added some decent functions (printers through GPO comes to mind) Windows 2003 R2 Small Business Server Standard added nothing really, other than money if you wanted to upgrade.

it sucks. shitty outbound protection and it can easily be disabled by malware.
but yes, I agree its better than using 3rd party bloated security software.

better than 3rd pty bloated shit... PLUS it's very non-obtrusive for the average-joe.

Couple Windows Firewall with a decent hardware SPF-equiped gateway and you've got a good solution for average joe.

SP2 was excellent. Windows Firewall is great; imo client PC needs an outbound firewall, and needs to be behind a stateful inbound firewall such as a decent router. Windows Firewall serves its purpose great and prevents users from needed bloated, buggy, obtrusive firewalls that cause more problems that anything.

SP3 I'm looking foward to in that it reputedly will bring major performance increases as well. I love XP!

I am very tempted to get a Mac Pro though and dual boot Mac OS and XP on there, and try to do as much as I can from within Mac OS without having to boot to XP. But I don't need an upgrade and can't really justify the price.

:hsugh: Please! It's no different than any other OS, and the fact that it's supported for 5 years or more makes it on par with most other operating sytems, particularly large enterprise distros. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself.

    http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/errata/

MS charges allot more for their OS, their product cycle is longer, and their update times lag behind those of other operating systems. Just because it hangs around for years doesn't mean you are getting a great deal, and don't even get me started on enterprise deployment. :ugh:

Yeah, I exaggerated. They missed a couple years.

    1996 - OS 7.6
    1997 - OS 8
    1999 - OS 9
    2001 - OS 10.0 and 10.1
    2002 - 10.2
    2003 - 10.3
    2005 - 10.4
    2007 - 10.5

Fucking idiot. You're getting ripped off.
