I'll be in Benning in less than two weeks...:wiggle:

Next week looks like the week I'll be signing the contract. I've already taken the ASVAB (99 percentile/140+ GT), and I also filled out the general information in the office with the recruiter. So, what should I expect at MEPS?

If you happen to remember my thread from a couple of months ago (I doubt any of you do), I said that I had exercise induced asthma. Well, it turns out that doctor was wrong: it's not on my medical records. I was just out of shape and blamed it on the asthma so I didn't try to work at it. Then, I couldn't run a mile without walking, now I can do 2 miles at a decent pace, although it isn't nearly as fast as I would like (somewhere between 18:30-19:00...I haven't been able to time it accurately). Should I have any problems in basic?

I'm planning on getting Airborne + opt. 40 in the contract.

Any advice you guys can offer?

cliffs: finally signing up, what do I expect at MEPS? +give me advice

    Which branch? Army?

At MEPS, when he asks to see your browneye, make sure you rip one.

    MEPS=Hurry up and wait.
Tons of waiting, you feel like cattle being herded to different areas.

    Yeah, Army.

I also ran 1.9 in 15:53 tonight...but it was mostly downhill once I got outside my neighborhood. I have a feeling I shouldn't have too much of a problem during basic. :hsughno:

If you are tempted to lie about anything, don't. Or if you do, make sure you can tell the exact same lie for the rest of your life.

MEPS guys get pissed off if you talk. Practice being quiet.

After your physical, you'll go sit with a person that will ask you what job you want. This person will be in a real big hurry and will try to get you locked into a job as quick as possible. THIS IS THE BIG MOMENT - DO NOT FUCK IT UP! If you aren't sure about the jobs that are being offered to you, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT ONE RIGHT THEN. It is completely acceptable for you to ask for a printout of the jobs and then go make a phone call or think about it for a while. You can even go home and come back another day if you need to. DON'T accept a job that you don't want, just because it is being shoved your way. ALSO - you can ask them to give you a printout of all available jobs that have BONUS $$ alloted to them. You can also ask them to show you what kinds of bonuses you qualify for.

Once you get to that point in the process, YOU are driving the bus. It may look like everyone else is in charge, but you can absolutely stop the entire process and get off the bus if you want to. Take your time. You will never again in your life see any of those people. But you're going to be stuck with that job for a long time, so make sure you do it right.

Thanks for the advice. I'm 99% sure I am gonna be signing up for infantry, unless something in the next few days completely changes my mind.

Anyone know what the current bonus for infantry is? It won't really affect the decision I'm just curious.

Yeah, so MEPS fucking sucked. I should have brought a book :wtc:

Anyways, I was permanently DQd for my eyes (my left eye is really bad), so I had to sit around for about 2-3 extra hours waiting on the waiver to come back...then I was put in the bottom of the stack to speak with a counselor. Then the most depressing shit happened. I had my Airborne + opt. 40 sitting there, about to be signed, then the dude realized I couldn't get that since I had a waiver. I went ahead and signed the contract though without the cool shit...so I'll be in Benning in less than two weeks. $15000 signing bonus which was pretty cool considering some kid who was waiting beside me earlier in the day said he got nothing for the same job (11x).

The counselor did say there was a chance for the doctor at MEPS to give me an Airborne stamp or something on my waiver that would allow me to get that option 40 back since it was only a problem with one of my eyes. So I called him up this morning and left a voicemail...no call back yet. What are the chances he was just jerkin' me around to get me to sign up yesterday? At this point I don't really even care if he was since it will probably make me work harder throughout basic to try to get one of the Airborne slots...who knows?

Pretty much if it's not on the contract, it's not going to happen.

You can get your eyes fixed while you are active duty, then you can go for airborne if you still want it. Military medical benefits ftw :bigthumb:

Well they told me the eyes wouldn't keep me out of Airborne once I go through basic, it's just that I couldn't get a slot in the contract with a waiver of any kind.

Oh yeah, and I called that dude yesterday in the morning when he told me to call: got his voicemail, left a message, and haven't heard back from him again. I don't see why the dude would have lied to me like that when I told him it wouldn't even affect my decision. :dunno:

And just a random question about the bonus: do they tax the entire amount and then give me the first $10k, or do they tax the first $10k and give me that amount?

MEPS in San Jose, CA = Watching Top Gun, Full Metal Jacket and other military flicks to represent branches of the recruits while waiting for shit. I'm going to  when they start showing the Guardian for the Coast Guard film.

Before I actually signed the dotted line everyone at MEPS was polite and what not...5min after that they were like "well you've got some time to kill 'til your next medical test, take a walk around the place and pick up trash." Being an E-1 is teh suck.

The amount they give you, and when they give it to you, will be detailed in your contract. Each check you get will be taxed individually.

For example, if you are supposed to get 50% after you graduate from AIT, they will take 50% of your bonus, subtract the taxes due on that amount, and the remainder will be what you actually see in your check.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for.

Next few months are going to be interesting :hs:

Oh yeah and the dude from MEPS called me back today while I was in the shower and left a voicemail. He said he talked to the doctor and she told him to check back tomorrow about the Airborne stamp :x:
