after i took a short break of 12months and started lifting again I couldn't extend my arms fully for 6 days, I am a great beliver of easing into new routines so personally I would rest until the pain goes and then hit it again and the pain won't be nearly as bad,

being sore is a good feeling though

sounds like you over did it

    stretch, water, lots of protein

if you are painfully sore, which happens to everyone, don't hit the muscles right away. its not worth it. when it gets bareable, hop on the elliptical or something and go light and slow, it'll get the blood flowing. stretch again and you're on your way. you might literally have to wait a week before hitting those muscles again

and.... don't listen to personal trainers

i tried doing standing calve raises on the smith machine for the first time the other day (i've been doing seated raises for like 4 months) and the next day my calves were pretty sore like i felt they were going to explod out of the skin but it wasn't very painful. the next day was leg day but obviously i wasn't going to do calves. i just did normal stuff, squats, pullthroughs, sldl, etc. and my calves actually felt a little better. i went home and sat down for a half hour and when i tried to stand up i couldn't :eek3:. yea so i had to stay home the next day and walk around the house on my tippy toes.
