Don't know anything about Ft. Jackson, but I was at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. You're going there for AIT.

Do you know what unit you will be going to? There's an OTer that's a DS at Jackson, you'd be lucky if you got him.

This is from another thread... the post was originally made by Ranger and Bassjunky edited it with some of his input as well. On the part where it says bring as little as you can, stick with just what you are authorized to bring. Don't bring anything else and don't think you can sneak it away and hide it. Your DS will find it and it's just not worth it.

APG is not that bad, gets a bit humid out there though. You'll be attached to Charlie Company. Make sure to go on the DC and Philly trips, something I regret not doing. I did however make a trip out to NYC. Also of course you can go to Baltimore on the weekends... but that city is DIRTY. Only decent place in Bmore is inner harbor.

Class wise it's cake. Don't know why you chose the MOS because honestly it's worthless.

Why do you say its worthless? I plan on goin in an electricians union when i get out, so that would help because it involves electricity.

Well I meant it in the context of being worthless as practical use in the Army. It'd definitely help with your electrician goals, but 52D's don't do jack shit in the Army, at least on the deployment side, and especially in the Guard.

Ft. Jackson was a cake walk. I expected a lot more from there. It was mainly easy for me, other than PT, which sucks to this day. You are going in January, correct, so you will not be in a "surge" of incoming trainees. BRING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE! It's the truth. I didn't believe people when they said it, but it's the truth. Bring the normal change of underwear and basic bathroom stuff, other than that, nothing you need. You'll buy stuff at the PX at reception a few days before you ship to actual basic training. Reception may last a week, or it may last a couple days, just depends on what's going on when you get there.

Do remember the Army Values and Warrior Ethos and maybe the Soldier's Creed. It's fun, really. Prepare to get scuffed up and smoked a lot. Remember, it's somewhat like being in high school with all the people being all "high schooly", but you'll probably never see those people ever again after Basic and AIT. I didn't have a bay as my barracks. The barracks by the Shopette and the main PX is the one I housed in. More than likely you'll have those barracks. They're like 8 man rooms and a few 2 man rooms. Maybe you'll get lucky like me and get the 2 man room. :)

And don't half ass the training, it's valuable, especially when you come to the sandbox.

Too late to switch to 11b? :hs:

    Oh and....
I don't know about Ft Jackson but at Benning we weren't allowed to leave the building for anything, especially to go running during reception (Or, ever really for that matter)

Bays are pretty much one big ass room filled with bunks. Ever watched Full Metal Jacket? Pretty much like that.

Yeah, I know to some people hearing that other soldiers didn't have to live in bays is horrible, and I understand completely. There are still bays in basic but there are also buildings that are not bays. It's the new Army, I guess.
