Turned out to be not quite as big a deal as I thought. :bigthumb:

VA gave me 50% disability for my fucked up thumb. The doc at Med Det asked me if I wanted to deploy. I told him I wouldn't be there if I didn't. He had me pick up varying weights with my thumb/forefinger and pronounced me good to go. I have a permanent profile, but it doesn't restrict me from doing anything.

He did caution me about the rest of the injuries listed on the VA report (that they haven't made a determination on yet). Most of them are minor, but he said that if they gave me anything above 0% on the TBI, I'd be sitting out this and any other deployment that came along. I think I'll give the guys at the VA a call tomorrow and ask them to hold off on my paperwork for a few years. :hsugh:

The money stops when I deploy. If I want it back I'll have to reapply after the deployment. But I didn't join the Guard for the money anyway. :wiggle:

the money is nice, but to serve for patriotism is awesome. i mean we all bitch about the military time to time (and by that i mean every day ;)) but lets face it, we all have just a little bit of pride for serving.

You got it. Nerve and tendon damage, and the blade apparently went through part of the grip-side of my knuckle. I had surgery to correct the tendon and nerve damage, but the nerve endings never grew back together. It's not as bad as it used to be. I don't get the electric tingle 24/7 any more, and the only time I have any real pain is when it gets cold - and then it hurts for days.

My PL sent me an awesome letter to take with me to Med Det, characterizing my ability to perform the mission before and after my thumb injury. I think I'll keep that letter with me for a while. It's like the best letter of reference you could ever imagine, and some. :)

my pinky finger is messed up from a similar incident. the knife cut through my tendon, muscle, and volar plate. i had to wear this :greddy: cast thing with hooks super glued to my fingernails and rubber bands stretched to hooks on the lower portion of the cast for a month. it was either that or never use my pinky again. and the physical therapy lady who made me wiggle it every day i wanted to draw and quarter. but thanks to her and a cast that had my hand in a permanent :greddy: position for a month i can use it a little. i know what you mean by the whole cold weather pain thing. :hs:
