So in light (haha late night pun) of my speedlight and my 12-24 (thanks K2 arrived in awesome condition just as described) I took it on a little photo trip today above San Francisco, luckly my gf let me take a picture of her (ouch yeah she hates the camera).

So on my mission of trying to understanding PP here is the original and the post... ibstartwithshitendwithshit

for #1, power down the flash and make the exposure longer so your g/f is more lit.

for #2, looks like the popup flash on your camera is bouncing off the lens and only hitting her face just above the mouth.

Overall white balancing looks off and she looks under exposed.

Just keep playing and you'll get it :)

Wait when you say pp-ed, you mean the second shot was all done post? Lighting is tough to completely change altogether in post which is what it looks like you tried to do...

I am still learning how to control the external flash, running in nikon wireless mode I need to make the Manual 1/1...1/2 power changes in the sub menu, super lame, or jack the apature around, but unfortunately she was not going to wait for me to change levels and get another picture. I also left the mini hot shoe stand in the car, so the flash was standing upside down on itself.

White balance is probably off a little since I kept camera on Auto White - one must be fast when dragging the camera along with a gf who hates the hobby (I have soo many pictures of her a 1/4 mile ahead of me flipping me off because she is sick of me playing around)

Yeah the popup runs as commander (using default nikon ir set up right now) and I just crawled in the window from outside and totally forgot to take the lens hood off.

    yup me = fail

I think next weekend I am going to get out and about with someone who likes to model and will give me time to experiment with settings, she is an art student (said hopeful) and will deal much better with me than my gf.

No, you don't. Nikon's CLS provides full wireless iTTL. You should start with that just to get comfortable with the system. In your camera's menu instead of setting it to M set it to TTL.

You HAVE to start with a descent material and then make it better with pp. You idea of pp is to take a really shitty picture and try to fix it with pp. Fail.
