So I did squats today for the first time ever

    135x10, 185x5, 185x6.

    I'm 5'6" @ 145. Anyways, I never really did them beacuse, well, never thought of doing them, and then I hurt my knee (which still hurts from time to time). Anyways, it really hurts to put the bar on my back. What's the best thing to put under the bar? Would a towel work?

    I was in your position too. Back when I first started, I always used a towel. Then I just stopped using them. It felt weird as hell but eventually I got used to it and now it feels weird with a towel.

    Nothing wrong with using the pad on the bar in my opinion. I use it.

    Try positioning the bar just above the shoulder blades. When you squeeze your shoulder blades together, it forms a slight shelf, so to speak. I used a pad before, but switched to a gym that didn't have one. After a while, you just get used to it. The problem I have is that it hurts my wrists holding the bar, especially with heavy weights.

    Doesn't using a pad move the weight backwards causing the muscles you want to work to have less of a role in the squat or something like that?

    I :dunno: I'm probably completely off, I vaguely remember reading that somewhere though. Anyone?

    Never heard that but using a pad does make you a pussy. There are a lot of studies that back that up.

    Well, having to use a pad means you have no traps - so yea, either you're a pussy or you're gay. Or even worse - a woman. :eek3:

    Just try not using it. It may hurt a bit but it is much more badass in the long run.
