Want something beginning in wide angle and going up to about between 50 and 80 mm. Doesn't have to be ultra quiet or extremely fast but would like decent clarity. Any recommendations?

if you can find it for that price, tamron 17-50. i paid 325 or so for mine. if you can't find it and can't scrape up the extra 25-50, get the tamron 28-75.

I've always liked the Canon 24-85 3.5-4.5, I use it alot for events/nightclubs b/c it's cheap to replace should anything happen to it, and it's not bad stopped down.
