Wouldn't you want an express card for that?

No, because I'm getting an eSata II Express card for my external hard drive. I doubt there is an express sound card available for a Mactel anyways if there's no USB or Firewire

What sucks about the onboard sound? Poor performance? Not enough features?

    My speakers don't accept optical.

I don't like the sound card because it's only 2 stereo analog output, and the sound quality is terrible compared to the X-Fi I had in my old desktop.

strange. my pb has great sound.

personally im a 2ch buff. even in my home cinema i use 2ch :)

that xfi site cracks me up though.. things like '24bit crystalizers' and the audio 'experience' chart. but hey im old school and things like digital reverbs and expanders give me headaches.

Ok, valid. But it is a notebook ;) There aren't too many notebooks out there with more than 2ch. Dell has a 5.1 notebook and a 7.1 notebook though, funny enough.

I disagree. I've never been a huge fan of Creative's soundcards. Iffy drivers, lots of marketing hype, and good, but not outstanding performance. I believe the codecs in the Apple notebooks are very good considering they are on the motherboard itself. I would imagine they would be in the 95dB S/N + THD+N range. Most computer speakers' amplifiers are in the 70dB range.

Where is the optical output on my macbook pro? I've got a headphone jack, and one next to it, which I thought was mic :o

Well shit, I'm going to use optical now, the HTIB that I've got setup in my room has optical I think, sweet.

You need a TOSlink cable with an adapter to mini TOSlink, or the other way around.
