Kind of a cool idea. They have a massive server infrastructure around the world, and they don't need all of it all the time, so they're selling CPU time and disk space to people who don't want to invest in their own server rooms. http://money.excite.com/jsp/nw/nwdt_rt_top.jsp?news_id=ap-d8ui0ku80& The only problem I see with it is it requires clients to have really fast internet connections, so they can copy data to the virtual servers they're paying for. If you're talking about gigabytes or terabytes of data, you could spend days or even weeks synching it all up. But hell, it's better than buying a rack full of servers and not getting your money's worth out of them.
