Now where is the best place to purchase this hard to come by lens?

I don't mind placing an order and waiting for stock to come as long as I can get it at retail.

Also how much could I get for my 18-55mm kit lens that came with my D50?

    That is $150 over MSRP.

You will never get the lens at MSRP in any reasonable amount of time. The number of backorders is enormous. You'd probably have to wait 6+ months.

The best way to get it is to pay a premium, or to get lucky and snag it from a local camera shop.

I'm on my 3rd one, every time I've went into my local dealer and got a new one it's taken no more than 2 weeks when I paid ahead of time. My dealer is called talls camera and I know Glazars has the same setup too.

First one stopped focusing to infinity after 135mm
Second one was dropped by a friend and the sleve was dented, sent it in to get a new sleve and nikon charged me 125 bucks, Got it back 8 weeks later turned around and sold it on Ebay for 1000
3rd one was bought by my friend right after he dropped it.

I use it tons more than the 70-200 surprisingly, I just always have a place for it I guess.

Optically, the 18-200 isn't that great.... it's not built too great either (lens creep from the factory on MANY samples, including my mom's, which does it just a little from somewhere in the middle).... and it's slow.... but, boy is it convenient.

I'd still pass on it and put the $800 to a better lens.

This is exactly why I never buy stuff on eBay.

You gotta sacrifice the range for performance. VR is great, but doesn't help you with dynamic, low-light images.

Like I said, convenient, but not the holy grail of lenses people make it out to be (there isn't one that "does it all")

    You might also consider:

    18-200VR

    vs.

    18-70mm + 70-300VR (more readily available)
