My wife wants one really bad. What are the pros and cons of this camera? Anyone have personal experience with it?

She wanted the Nikon D70 until this one came out... I'm really trying hard to save up enough to buy this thing for her.

I'd like to know if it is the camera of choice :) For a somewhat affordable professional camera, is it the one that comes recommended or is there something else that is better?

I don't know much about them, but I find that more valuable information about these things comes from the people with experience.. If you were to buy a camera for around $1500-2000, what would you buy? Would it be the 20D?

the camera is great, it has advantages over the d70, though the d70 has the cheeper price point. Keep in mind that its the lenses and not the body that make the biggest difference in image quality, and that they hold their value better. You don't want a 1500 body and a 100 lens.

The 20D is great all around, but really has advantages in speed and low light performance.

I started with the orignal canon, the D30, moved to a 10D and now to a 1D Mark II. My father has the D60, and future father in law has the 20D, so I've used all the different Canons.

The 20D is a great camera that can last for a long time and make you really happy, but keep i mid that to really take advantage of it you'll need good lenses, a flash, a tripod etc

that was going to be my second choice after the d70. I liked the fact that the 20d does 5fps instead of the d70's 3fps but the fact that my work had nikon mount lenses was a deciding factor for me, even though I ended up buying better lenses than they have...:mamoru:

Lenses hold their value better than a body. You can buy a Canon 300D and get some nice glass, and when she gets better upgrade to the 20d (it will probably be cheaper by then) and reuse the glass and/or flash. How experienced is she? What will she be using it for? If you don't need a DSLR you can go for a prosumer cam like the nikon 8000 series or a canon powershot.

    Above you
    Pros:
Low noise for high ISO settings
    High FPS shooting - 5fps
Improved startup times compared to the 10D
    Great quality images

    Cons:
    Loud mirror slap noise
    No environmental seals
    No spot metering

Those are the ones I can think of right now.

20D is the best in its class right now. Until Nikon comes out with the D80 or D200 that is. :big grin:

I'm learning a lot, this is great. She will mostly be doing this in all of her free time and maybe at some point pursue this as a side-career.

I hear that the 20D is the best in its class, several advantages over the D70... When is Nikon due to come out with the next gen of this sort?

    see above post.

seriously, no one knows. Nikon hasn't had a replacement for the D100 for years, and nothing concrete in site. Thees rumors floating around of a toned down D2X, but only time will tell. They also are notoriously bad about shipping once then announce the camera.

I'm betting they announce it in the spring, and try to have it on shelves by next fall. Regardless, they are behind right now.
