What's the difference? As far as my (limited) knowledge of shooting goes, they both serve very similar purposes...

For what most people use their "sniper rifles" for, there isn't one. Of course the design paradigms for a gun destined to be used for actual slotted "snipers" are somewhat different, mostly in gearing towards crazy durability in a wide variety of conditions.

Witness the first M40's, which were just heavy barreled reminton 700's. Nowdays anything with a semi heavy barrel, turret equipped glass and a synthetic stock is easily confused for a "sniper rifle", especially if its colored in black.

Another bogus marketing type term that seems to have risen with the "tactical" crowd.

depends on how serious you are about hunting.....

hunting rifles that you buy off the shelf are generally accurate enough to hit a deer size target at a reasonable range...."sniper rifles" can be designed and built such that they hit a much smaller target for obvious reasons (wound vs. kill)

benchrest blows all of them away, but you can't exactly deploy those in a mission (LEO/military/militia)

It can also be broken down to fit into small luggage like briefcases, duffel bags, and guitar cases.

A hunting rifle is designed to kill deer... A "sniper rifle" is designed to kill babies/women/children... :)

ironically, hunting rifles don't sneak out of the gun safe while you're sleeping and hunt nuns like a sniper rifle does.

According to the VPC, a sniper rifle is anything with a bipod and scope.

Hunting rifles are light enough to carry around comfortably, sniper rifles aren't.
