Today my gym cancelled their smoker (at the last minute), which had MMA, MT and boxing, because of CA atheltic commission. We have held them before. All smokers are banned in CA until this is solved. Anyone know any information of this?

I have a feeling this will be solved quick, considering how supportive CA (and arnold) is with MMA.

Isn't it legal on private property, regardless of regulation?

My boxing gym just had a big smoker which we won 8-2 or something like that. They do it every year. Its all set up by coaches in the Chicago Park District so I imagine its authorized by any IL commission.

you can't have an unregulated MMA event but as far as I know MT and boxing smokers are ok.

    Why not?

If sparring in the gym is legal, why isn't an unsanctioned amateur MMA event? I never really understood this.

Governments like to stick their nose in other people's business just because they can. MMA is no different.

because amateur MMA isn't legal in CA. it was close to being legalized last year but fell through and so did the first amateur mma event. this year nothing has changed.

however, fights that are considered exhibition matches are legal. for a legal smoker or exhibition event to take place it has to be proposed to the athletic commission by a licensed promoter.

My guess is this has to do with the recent Din Thomas incident in FL, where he was accused of "underground fighting" which the judge threw out instantly when he found out it was a smoker, and the dumbass cops put him through all that drama and bad press.

Din Thomas said he'll try to make it officially legal, since the current lawd oesn't say if it's legal or not. I am guessing CA is doing the same. I'm sure it'll be legal, but they wanna put it in writing so there is no contraversy.

As long as they aren't charging admmission, I don't see why it is any different than HARD sparring...
