HP laptop, probably about two years old. DV1000 series. I bought used. It has served me well for almost a year. I'm using it right now. Anyways, something has happened to the AC Adapter port. After a minute or so of being plugged in, the area around the port gets really hot, and I can smell/see smoke coming out of cpu fan grill-opening.:noes:

I'm wondering what my options are for fixin' it. Mainly, does anyone have any idea what the exact problem is? Obviously, electricity isn't acting nicely and it's trying to start a fire.

It's not under warranty, so should I just open it up and find the problem, or would a local CompUSA or BestBuy be able to fix it? Is contacting HP my only real option?

    ARGH.

    Help me please.

Your best bet is to find a grizzled old man who's built god-knows-how-much electronic equipment in his lifetime, and offer to buy him beer in exchange for fixing it.

Shit man, I dunno what kind of beer YOU drink, but a six-pack of Miller High Life doesn't cost THAT much.

That's my thinking too. I looked around HP's website and they said CompUSA and Best Buy are authorized support centers... should I just bring it to them and see if they'll ship it to HP for me?

    I'm so lazy:mamoru:

Definitely not my first option. I wonder how much I could get for it's parts though.

Yeah, give this a shot. Back up the hard drive first though.
