I seem to recall hearing somewhere that squatting on a smith machine'll fuck up your knees. Anyone else ever heard this?

i started on the smith machine because i didn't have the strength to balance the bar :o now i do free squats...i feel like it works your core more too since you're not sitting

If you can't squat the bar, get a broom stick, don't use the smith machine!

I know this, believe me, but the meager assed community college weight room I work out at doesnt ahve a free squat setup. Only a smith.

So I've been relegated to leg extensions and leg presses, and wondering if I should go ahead and do the smith squats. I just worry that I'll blow out a knee with the amount of weight I put on the squat bar (490 - 520)

Please dont squat in the smith machine. It has it's uses, squatting is not one of them.

it wasn't my legs that were the problem...my arms were too weak to balance it properly

plus no one really uses that entire side of the gym lol..since ive been there i've seen it used maybe twice...once by this roid rage guy who would kick yoga balls around, and the other time by a female athlete

Load a barbell on the ground, clean said barbell and do front squat!

Also, if your gym only gives you a smith machine, FIND A NEW GYM!

You should have moved your arms in more, and pinched your back together creating a shelf to place the bar on... Anybody can do this regaurdless of how skinny they are.

This is probably your best bet if your gym doesn't have a squat rack. There's a kid in my gym who does this even though we have three squat racks.
