Moving to alaska and need a sidearm for when im out fishing in bear country. Im 17 so im not that big and need a somewhat small pistol. My dad has a grizzly 44 semiauto in the 1911 chassis and it seems to be way to big for me, i want something compact but will still fuck the bear up if one would charge and would detour the fucker.

I want a semiautomatic, no revolver. And i know it is illegal for me to carry one, but im not fucking around out there by my self with out protection.

My dad said just saw the barrel off my shotgun and use that, but i dunno about that, lol..

was thing a 40 or 45 would do it now?

    thanks in advance!

Ruger Super Redhawk® Alaskan® double action revolvers provide the confidence of a six-shot cylinder in a size and weight that is practical enough to conveniently carry afield. Features include:

    ** 2 1/2" frame-integral barrels, available in .454 Casull and .45 Colt, .480 Ruger, and now .44 magnum.

** .454 Casull and .480 Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskans are the most compact revolvers available in these calibers.

** Super Redhawk Alaskan feature satin finish stainless steel.

** Strong extended frame has extra metal in top strap, sidewalls and barrel mounting areas to handle the powerful .44 Magnum, .454 Casull and .480 Ruger cartridges.

** Patented single spring mechanism for both hammer and trigger.

** Triple-locking cylinder is positively locked into the frame at the front, rear, and bottom for more positive alignment.

** Peg-style grip frame easily accommodates custom grips.

    ** Hogue® Tamer™ Monogrip® helps cushion recoil.

wow..my dad had once a 454 casull, that was a big ass pistol. How much would one of those go for?

I would carry a 300 weatherby or a 375 h&h if i go bear hunting...its just when im out in bear country fishing... i want a pistol.

Do you think that would be a good choice for me?

Well, thats what Ruger designed it for, I think they are around $800.

Not something your gonna want to take to the range and target shoot a lot with though.

Either that or a S&W500 or 460 with the short barrel.

I wouldn't trust any pistol cartridge vs. a bear.

the S&W 500 would fuck up a bear soo much. The 50 caliber slug has 3 times as much power as the 44 magnum, which alone packs a kick. Also isn't it like a serious crime to shorten the barrel of a shotgun past 18 inches or somthing?

there was an article posted in here a little while ago, where a home owner killed a bear in his bathroom with a .40 XD i think...

but go with a VERY large calibre revolver... and some speed loaders ;)

I think even if a grizzly is charging you and you have a rifle or a pistol, you're gonna shit your pants and get eaten rather than actually squeezing a round off.

Get someone to watch your back, don't be stupid, educate yourself about bears. If you can't handle a cartridge that would disable a bear, don't put yourself in a situation where you'll need to.

:werd: Just be sure to aim carefully and shoot out both of the charging bear's eyes, and you should be safe without breaking your budget.

if you don't want to carry a pistol that will actually do the job well then look at a short barreled shotgun with slugs.

    no .50BMG pistol no care...

only a single shot, but it'll put'em down for sure

or the muzzle blast will burn it's eyes from 10 ft away, either way, win win. Just don't miss.

motha fuckin flame thrower YO! It'll burn all the bears hair off, then when it realizes it is indecent it will run for cover in a bush, leaving you plenty of time to escape safely
