Slow Harddrive problem on new gaming rig I built

    Specs:
    2048 2-2-2-5 Mushkin redline
    400gig(primary) sata 7200rpm 8mbcache hdd hitachi((((WINDOWS ON THSI))))
    120gig(ide slave) 8mb cahce 7200rpm western didgital
    250gig (ide primary) 8mb cahce 7200rpm western digital
    amd64 939 3200+
    abit av8 3rd eye mobo
    ati x800xt pe 256mb
    creative audigy 2 platinum ex


    i get major slowdowns when system ha sno spyware, is defragged etc... it takes forever to open up my pictures and to install games. whats going on?


    windows xp home sp2 with all updates and latest drivers on everything else like mx510 my 24" monitor etc etc

    Defragging is going to bog down any rig. It's processor and disk intensive. Do you by chance have a LOT of pictures in the folder you are trying to open the pictures in? It could be XP trying to create all the thumbnails and reading all the image details (does the same crap with video if you have the folder view in detailed). Run perfmon and check the physical disk queue length and processor % utilization while doing stuff (other than defrag) that slows the system down. See if the queue length is greater than 1.

    like evil said, it could be the caching of the picture thumbnails.

    also, where does your cd drive come into play? maybe try installing windows on the 120 gb and save the 400gb for data storage.
