I currently have two off the rack suits in the 400-600 range that I use for business mostly. They are traditional cut, tailored, charcoal pinstripe.

I'm very slim and have been described as having a European build and face. I want to pick up a slim fitted suit for events, nights out, and fancy dress that makes me look good.

The options seem to be thus:
    1. Pick up something from last year at an outlet for a low price, have it tailored.
    2. Pick up something newer for a medium price, have it tailored.
    3. Have a suit made to order at one of the many places in Boston for a high price.
    4. Have an MTM suit made from Thick as Thieves LA for 500. (http://thickasthievesla.com/) [heard a lot of good things about the guys there]

I can spend any amount, though obviously the goal is to get the best bang for the buck. If a 500 dollar suit looks 90% as good as a 1000 custom suit, I'd rather go with the 500 dollar one now.

Having said that, what are some others' experiences with this type of situation? What would you recommend and what stores/brands would you recommend I take a look at? For reference, I am 5'11" 145, very slim, athletic.

Edit: I'm reading through the linked thread now (http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=3460956) but as it is 2 years old I'd like some more input :)

It seems that Zara's website is having issues. Can you be more specific about your experience there?

yeah i am currently in korea and got a custom fit suit made. my jacket and vest looks and feels great but they completely fucked my pants up. i told them keep it nice and slim, id rather have it tigher than too loose and they made them baggier than golfers pants in the 60's. i just wear the jacket with jeans now (summer grey, pics will come as soon as i get home).

i guess i cant really complain though since i got the entire suit for around 175 bucks.

not as great as you think...its all depends on the tailor...same goes for here in korea...all these tailors here think they can mimic anything out of GQ but the actual final product is 50% of the quality, at best

You just need to find the quality ones. I know where to go for $99 everyday suits and I know where to go for high quality suits in the $200-$400 range.

I agree most of the cheap tailors will tell you they can make anything but you get what you pay for, even in asia. There are very good tailors out there though and you just need to find them and fork over a little more money.

This is the one that I had custom made in Korea for me. Suit, vest, "custom fit shirt," (shirt and vest not pictured) and 2 ties (low quality) cost $175.

This is an off the rack Boss suit my sister in law bought for me back in ilke '01. never got it brought in or any sort of alteration as you can see...i never found a tailor i could trust enough. plus i was a kid and didnt really know a difference. i filled the suit out more cause i was +30 lbs when it was bought for me.
