I'm going to teach a class at the university tomorrow and Thursday. I'm really stoked to do it, but am in no way qualified to teach it, aside from my having taken the course before, my passion for the subject and my 1st hand experience.

So I'm thinking there's gotta be some sort of PUA-style to teaching, right? Saying things the right way, asking questions to get students involved, etc.

Any ideas? Any tips from presenters and PUAs?

And as a student, would you listen to/respect a guest speaker more if he wore flip-flops, a suit, or something in between? I'll def. act more confident if I'm wearing something in between (like nice dark jeans, Vans-style shoes, striped dress shirt, sweater vest) or a suit.

Also, I want to pick up a college girl :naughty:

FYI, I'm teaching Web typography principles to newspaper design students in an attempt to get them thinking about how Web and newspaper design interrelate.

I wasn't really sure where else to post this, but I figured the various social techniques and failures of VAG could come in handy here :dunno:

    Always over dress.

Flip flops is a joke, def. don't do that.

Dress shirt is much preferred to a sweater vest, lulz.

How did you get in the position where you're teaching something that you're not qualified to teach?

Sure. I was a corporate trainer for a few years before I got laid off. If you're comfortable speaking in front of people you're already ahead of the game. Studying bodylanguage and PUA/Social Dynamics definitely helped me with this a LOT. Once I got used to things, I was really relaxed. I would sit on my desk while teaching, joke with the people in my class, etc. But I'd also kick people out who were being unruly (strangely enough, that does happen even when you're teaching adults, like I was).

Just be confident. Sometimes I didn't know exactly what I was talking about but I sure didn't let my audience know that.

However, if someone asks you a question that you don't know the answer to, do not make something up. Just say "oh you know what, that's a really good question. I will get back to you about that on Thursday because I want to make sure I get you the right answer" and then actually go and find out the answer.

Depends on the nature of the class. Don't wear too many layers. I used to get hot as fuck when I was teaching a class (partially because the temperature control system was fucked up, seriously one day it was 88 degrees in my room, and my room had floor to ceiling windows on two sides which just acted like a greenhouse and made it even hotter) and I would have to stuff my armpits with paper towels between classes.

Hmm, sounds pretty progressive. You probably don't have to wear a suit, but wearing a t-shirt would be too informal.

Hahaha. Hilarious. And that sucks, it's gross to see people with wet armpits. Especially when it's captured in a picture and posted on facebook.

the professor (who was my professor when I was a student a year and a half ago) really respects my handle on design and typography and asked me to teach whatever I wanted for a couple days while he was out for surgery. I misspoke I think. It's not that I don't know the subject...I just have no idea how to teach lol

    cool, thanks for that response

Oh. Dude, I would love being in that situation!

Be confident and have fun (stereotypical response, I know). Lemme know if you have specific questions about anything.

PUA-style to teaching? You just have to be knowledgeable about the subject so that you can teach and be able to answer the questions! Before class, just go through the materials carefully, ask yourself the questions they might ask and just make sure you know the subject very well. During class, you have to be aware of the fact that not all the students are on the same level, so maybe you have to slow it down a little sometimes and ask questions to get them involved. Students can make very stupid mistakes sometimes, don't get frustrated in such situations and don't make them feel bad about it. Be friendly.

Yea, it's going to be a really easy primer on typography, then I'm going to let the students check out some Web sites with lots of design inspiration and ideas for a bit. Then I'll have them do a creative exercise w/ typography. I'm going to walk around and talk to the students and answer any questions they have. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep it easy and fun, and even better: maybe some students will leave with some inspiration :dunno:

that dudes outfit is legit. I don't like the jeans though but i'm not a fan of light colored jeans like that, slightly darker colored jeans would be awesome. Socks are what makes that outfit
