I finally got my SKS refinished, cleaned, reassembled and improved (CNC gas valve). Refinished the stock, de-cosmoed everything with dishwasher/mineral spirits, cleaned religiously, coated with Rem Oil and reassembled. I let the bore soak with Sweets and then with Hoppes for about 20 min each and it was like a mirror when I was done. Those Serbs may have liked to gun down their neighbors but they knew how to keep a barrel clean.

I got it all done about 30 min before I left for the range so all I could do was to go to Wal Mart and pick up 20 rounds of Remington x39 for $14 :ugh:

Anyway, it shoots beautifully, the recoil is fine (I have never shot an x39 before), but holy FUCK semi-auto centerfire rifles are fun :eek3: The trigger on mine is nice and light - well, compared to my Mosins and Mauser.

It's like discovering that the girl you knew all along also has a mouth and an ass :o

The gas system worked perfectly and ejects so hard that a couple cases were sparking on the metal crap in the ceiling above me. It's shooting high and to the right so I either need to adjust the front post or just get a tech sight or something.

I also tried some Remington target .22 instead of the bulk garbage I usually shoot. My 60 year old Westernfield with Mossberg peeps made a ragged hole at 25 yards

My Yugo SKS shoots real nice too. I put the Williams Firesights on it, and I was grouping the size of a dime @ 25 yards the first time I shot it after installing them.

Probably getting some leakage. $9 is a cheap fix :o

Mine was shooting the casings firmly into the ceiling :naughty: However, I also cleaned the shit out of the gas system and piston.

If you have you C&R, $150-$250.

    http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/SKS_Yugo__Yugoslavian_M59_66_SKS_7_62x39_Rifle.html

Mine is in "VG" surplus condition which means the stock has some character and the bluing is a bit worn, but I like it. It's a military rifle, not a show piece.

    http://www.samcoglobal.com/rifles.html

Samco has BRAND NEW ones for $230.

edit: this assumes you want a Yugo and not a Chicom, Russian, or Albanian.

You could hang around on surplusrifle.com and gunboards and post a WTB for an instate deal.

The big difference is that the Yugos don't have a chrome bore.

    http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/index.asp

Off the top of my head the other difference is that the firing pin is not internally spring-loaded in the bolt. In poorly maintained guns that can lead to a slamfire condition. You can also buy a spring-loaded pin and retrofit it.

i don't know about the yugo's... but my norinco supposedly will go 50k rounds, before you need to change the piston out... now adding the fact, there's more moving parts on the yugo's... i say it would be less, and it would impove ejection if you did.

Word, I might have to give it a shot. I could also have some gunk left in the gas system, I may need to give it a good cleaning... some of the cosmo still seeps out of the wood when it gets heated up after a few dozen rounds :o

    Nice av :coold:

Supposedly the pecking order is, best to "worst":

    Russian
    Albanian
    Chinese
    Yugo

That said, these things are so fucking simple and so robust that I think the quality differences are really miniscule.

edit: also Yugos are the only ones with grenade launchers and night sights :naughty:

if you are in CA I don't think you can get the grenade launcher one (Yugo) :o You'll need to get a CA-compliant one that has had it removed.
