I recently heard that once your skin starts to swell it decreases the absorption of ink, therefore the optimum tattoo session should about 1hr or so for the best results. Is this true? Should sessions be kept to about 1hr each time?

Don't know where you heard that from. I've had 6+ hour sessions and I've heard of people going all day. My tattoo artist did tell me though its not that good to go over spots that you just gone done, so he wanted me to somewhat heal before he started shading an area I just got done. Might be different for others.

Most artists working on big pieces usually go anywhere from 3-6 hours with no problems.
