this could be in the wrong forum or a total repeat thread (sorry if it is!! i haven't taken the time to figure out how to search old threads or if i'm even allowed to do that...)

I'm about to equip my car with mp3 player/satellite radio capability...

Anyone wanna take the poll? XM or Sirius? Pros/Cons

Sirius used to be better (b/c Clear Channel didn't own them), but as ngsm13 wrote I believe that XM bought sirius and now are both owned by XM. Check the stations and see which has more you like.

Edit: OKAY...I'm retarded...I revoke my input in this thread.

yea im so lazy and dumb, lol

i just searched the forums for this topic and found like 10 threads

still not sure what to get though - it seems like everyone just wants to say "xm is better" "no stupid, sirius way is" i guess i'm looking for what makes them each unique but ill probably just end up picking one randomly - i'm sure they aren't that much different, esp. if they are co-owned now or w/e

    but thanks!

if you like rap & hip hop, Sirius has better (and more) r&b, hiphop & rap stations between the two

    I believe exactly the opposite.

Sirius: Rock (more and better), Sports (Variety), Jazz
    XM: Rap/HipHop, R&B, Pop, Top40 music, News...

Things should get interesting later on this year once the merger is complete . . . if it is approved that is. I have had XM in one vehicle for years and had planned to get Sirius in the other just to have a bit of variety, best of both worlds I guess you could say. I'm curious to see if they continue to support equipment on both sides or eventually phase out one side.

To answer your question, I can't speak to Sirius as I have only occasionally listened, but I've had XM almost since the beginning and they have definitely improved and grown a lot over the years. There is always something to listen to that I or my passengers like. I think I actually save $$$ with it as I don't buy as much music. As far as specifics go, http://www.radiosatellite.org has some good information about both services, although not sure how current as they both continue to change and grow (for the better of course).

i didn't think one bought the other, they're merging, or at least trying to. they have to get FCC approval first i believe, or someones approval that they don't have a monopoly. i can't remember the exact details

Thats basically it. I think they will let them do it, otherwise one and possibly both can not survive. They will probably approve it with conditions on fee hikes and equipment support. This is one reason while I was reluctant to get one or the other in the beginning. I never thought both would survive and I didn't wan't to spend $$$ on something that would shortly be obsolete. Well, XM was online first, atleast here on the west coast if I remember correctly, so that is what I went with. But for this reason, I couldn't justify paying several hundred $$$ for Sirius' lifetime subscription they had a few years ago. A good deal if they last, but a waste of $$$ if they don't.

It's pretty much quantity over quality too. You'll have a ton of music but the sound quality isn't exactly amazing.

i dont see why the FCC wouldnt approve it, there are monopolies everywhere and as a part of economics they are often times the best choice

as long as they dont give the idea where they would be using the power to strong arm sister industries then it should be fine

I"m finding lately that the sound quality with XM is seriously lacking....they need to get rid of 10-20 stations and up the bandwidth for the remaining stations.

I truly can't understand why people choose XM over Sirius. Both my parents have XM and whenever I am forced to drive around with them I cringe because no matter what station they change to the music selection is always god awful! Whereas myself and everyone who rides in my car constantly comment about how good the music selection is. :dunno:
