I don't do any ab work what so ever, so I am sure I have pretty weak abs. I am going to start some "needsize ab routine" I found on afboard today to fix the problem

Anyway, this problem happens mostly on front squats, although every now and again on back squats. As soon as I unrack the weight and do one rep, I have a really hard time taking a deep breath for the next rep. I can kind of bounce the weight up to get the weight off a little and then take in the rest of the breath.

Could this be a sign that my abs are weak and the weight being all on the front is compressing my midsection making it difficult to take in a full breath? Or does this happen to everyone on front squats?

I am having a serious problem today wording my posts, so this ended up being a bit long. :o

    Even front squats?

Here is the routine, it's very simple. There were a bunch of other posts about it, and it sounds really good.

Which sounds good to me because I hate ab work with a passion.

I was thinking about doing a couple sets of those, then a couple of pretty much the same thing but with a plate and twisting side to side.

Yea I don't have that problem. On front squats I can just feel my whole body is very uncomfortable though

Well, I only made three sets of five. I have never felt my entire midsection burn for so long. I could barely breathe or talk for a few moments after each set.

I will definately be doing those again.

Granted I have pretty weak abs, but it seemed to work a lot better than what I've done in the past. It got good reviews on AF as well.

    Lying ab contractions front/right/left 1x30ea
    Leg raises 3-4x10-12
    Weighted Incline situps 3-4x10-12

im going to buy some spud straps from elitefts so i can train abs standing up - im guessing it will have the most functional carry over to squat and dead lift.

i feel like when I tighten my core during squats they get a good workout as far as stabilization, because being in correct posture creats a serious need for core stability during squats.

Other than that, there's some good things to do... I like doing overhead plate lunges (hold a barbell plate over your head and do walking lunges)

also backwards lunges with a barbell on your back seem really good for core strength if you keep your torso perfectly vertical.

Both of those and a few other things are in an article on t-nation about core strengthening through stability work.
