I need a sidearm that has the power to stop a bear or mountain lion in its tracks. If at all possible, it should be one that can penetrate a brown bear's skull.

The purpose of this gun will be to protect myself in the wilderness. I am a geologist, so I often find myself going to remote areas and spending hours (sometimes days) by myself. Starting this Spring, I will regularly be going to a location where several people have been attacked by mountain lions and bears in the past. Several years ago in a similar location, a hiker was killed after being mauled by a bear. Despite being armed. After the bear was tracked down, it was discovered that most of the bullets had ricocheted off of the bear's skull... while several had entered its abdomen. While the hiker had apparently fired under a very nervous state, it was also obvious that his gun was too weak to stop the advance of the bear.

Naturally, I'm not going to fuck around with "animal-friendly" repellants. If a predator threatens me, I want it dead. Period. Of course, a shotgun or rifle would do the trick... but they would be too cumbersome for me to carry around all the time. Price is not a huge issue, although I would prefer to spend no more than $1000.

I'm guessing that a good old Desert Eagle can do the trick :hsugh: ... but I'm wondering if I could do the job with a less powerful gun given the right bullet type. Thoughts?

What wilderness are you going to and what type of bears? I'm guessing you aren't going to AK, so that leaves black bears. A .357 or .44 mag should do the trick. Or you could go crazy with a .454/.480/whatever the newest one is.

Colorado and Oklahoma wilderness... so I would be concerned about black bears (although it would be nice if it could handle brown bears as well).

One of the field locations is actually located within a considerable population of mountain lions.

and this is another testament as to why you should aim at a charging animals chest, not it's head. :hsugh:

  6. Look at a full power 10mm load. It makes other autoloaders look sad, and lots of revolvers.

  8. I've heard lots of people call Magnum Research reliability into question, not something I'd want to worry aboutwhen a bear is coming at me.

In a situation like that, I dont think you would be too concerned about the recoil. Plus I would get it in .44 Magnum, that would be enough for Black bear and Cougar.

It will not be fun by any means to shoot, but take it for what it is.............a large caliber compact revolver thats meant to stop a bear. :bigthumb:

Not only would it be overkill it would also be a pain in the ass having a gun that big. I dont understand what all the desert eagle hype is all about. Sure its a big gun, but thats about all it has going for it.

460v (SW X-Frame). They make a 2" bear kit one, also a 5". I'd get that or the 4" 500 SW. Both beautiful weapons. Neither is too much to handle (my 340pd has more felt recoil then either of them).
