I know this has been covered, but I'm trying to figure out the cheapest dedicated hosting that I can get by with. I'm sick of the slow speeds and the downtime involved with shared hosting. Ive been looking at the value plans on Aplus.net
http://servers.aplus.net/valueservers.html and a few others. Its mainly for my site that uses wordpress and gets anywhere from 10-20k pageviews per day(hopefully that will continue to grow as well). I've also been hesitant to do this because dreamhosts control panel is so easy to use, and I will have to move over my database and everything involved with my wordpress site. I know very little about doing all of that. I seem to use about a gig per day in transfer. Will the value server with these specs suffice? Value Server - Celeron 1.7GHz;512MB DDR400 SDRAM;80GB IDE HDD

why not look in to a vps? might save a few dollars with the stability of a dedicated server.

lame. it's almost as much as a dedicated box, and it's still shared.

as far as moving your database, it should just be a matter of doing an sql dump of a backup you've got.

Really shouldn't be difficult, at all. :dunno:

 I hope so, I bet there are a lot of tutorials to move wordpress to another server anyway. There seems to be one for everything about wordpress :x:

The main thing Im trying to figure out is if that value server will be fast enough to handle my site load? I assume that it will be since its been Ive been pretty stable on a shared server, but I dont want to have to upgrade in a month either.

Well, I honestly think you'll be okay.

I've had blog posts of mine dugg and after I did the wp-cache plugin deal, the site loaded fine (and was getting 20k hits/day :dunno: )

They *do* offer some upgradability with the value servers too, they offered me a gig of ram for another like $10/$15 month.

If you do signup, lemme know. I'll have u sign up under me :naughty:

I use: http://openreaction.com and I've been really happy with them.

You can probably pick up a dedi with good specs and an unmetered 10mBit connection for your price range there.

I just had a live chat with a guy at aplus. I guess the value server doesnt come with mysql or windows, which will dramatically increase my cost. I think I need mysql, but is having a windows server necessary? Im just trying to make the move from dreamhost to this server painless and being able to run things without having to learn a ton of new shit. Dreamhost really makes it easy for me :wtc:

Absolutely not, I'd go as far as to say that some variation of linux is the norm.

 I dont care as long as I can do the same shit that I can do with dreamhost, but have very little downtime, and good speeds.

The box is plenty for your wordpress site. The biggest thing I would be looking at is the speed of their connection to the box. If the latency is too much or they are on shitty bandwidth, you'll lose traffic as people don't want to deal with that crap. Ask them for some IP's that point to their routers or machines, and find a looking glass site to do some pings from all over the country. Rate them, and see if they are sufficient to the speed you are expecting to give your users.

    That's just my .02

If you get cpanel/WHM there is an option to copy one account from one server to another, including MySQL. I've done that a few times on the servers at liquidweb with no problems.

phpMyAdmin is what I use whenever I need to work with a database (most any site I setup now automatically creates the tables for me)

It is very simple and he's trying to sell you a more expensive server.

there's a screenshot of phpmyadmin (which is where you handle all your database stuff) and I included a screenshot of plesk. This is where you reset the server, make any changes, etc. I can get you more if you can think of anything specific you're curious about.

Well if the salesman is saying it doesnt come with mysql he is either lying (why would he lie about that sales man makes his product look worse) or it doesnt come with a database.
