Maybe IM just being paranoid but I have been looking at stuff like ourt well, bomb shelter and egg producing chickens as assets in a likely SHTF depression in this country in the next 5 years. Am I being paranoid? Im already ramping up food storage, emergency med kits and a little ammo each payday...

to me it just seems like this gas situation's going to cause riots and hassle, unemployment, people not able to afford food one of these days.

even if we ride out this gas storm and figure out something it'll be good to have the cement root cellar stocked I guess.

In my opinion, yes. A "SHTF depression" seems as likely to me as godzilla attack but as usual the news gives people 3 minute sound bites on how scary something in and they panic even though they have little idea what they're talking about. Guns, the economy, flu, whatever sells that day.

Retiring baby boomers has been cited as a possible cause for a major depression. Personally, I dont know if I buy it 100%, but the threat IS there.

I personally don't see anything major happening, but I do believe in being prepared for localized issues. Weather, earthquake, power/water outage. I'd much rather be prepared than left trying to survive later.

If you can afford to save and prepare, why not?

I look at everything with a possible 'SHTF' value now.

I believe strongly that 5 days with no power would turn South Atlanta into Mogadishu.

I was rather surprised by how well we did a couple years ago w/o power for a couple days, I was expecting the same here.

Katrina was enough for me to start buying guns.

I don't yet have a good plan besides defending my own house, and the only real supplies I have are ammunition, a first aid kit, survival blanket and firestarter.

Two weeks of food and water
A shitload of ammo (not by arfcom standards but I'm sitting on a few thousand dollars of 5.56mm)
    Fresh propane and a stove
    New ax
    New hatchet
    New saw
    Paracord
BDUs and some other milsurplus gear
    A week's worth of MREs
    Signal flares
    First aid stuff
    Candles
    A ton of CR123 batteries

If I haven't put together a plan within that time, I deserve to die.

Bag of warm clothes, gear, boots, and a little food goes with me in my trunk at all times. The weather here changes all the time and it sure doesn't hurt to be prepared.

I also have my backpacking backpack packed and ready to go, but that's mostly to keep all the stuff in one place so I don't forget it when I go backpacking.

There's a great post here that I think many of you might want to read http://www.survivalmonkey.com/forum/showpost.php?p=30698&postcount=9 It shows that "even" in argentina an economic collapse didn't bring about the living in the woods and eating grubs life. Times were tougher but they still went about life. Work, chores, trying to pay for the house...very little playing commando with cases of ammo. Will you have food and water when the earthquake/hurricane/sea monsters attack?

Cutting down trees with an axe to make a shelter type SHTF scenarios are unlikely. A fairly significant depression is highly likely, as are geographic disasters such as Katrina.

So maybe you don't need a fishing pole or a tent, but a cheap generator, fuel, water, food, guns, a fair amount of savings/stocks/cash (preferably a portion of foreign denominated) will get you by.
