I've been itching to upgrade my computer
was hoping to hear some suggestions on what would be the smartest plan.

    Currently I have a

    Pentium 3.2ghz dual gore cpu
    2gigs ram
    7900gtx video card
    built in realtek hd audio
I am happy with keyboard, mouse, monitor etc, talking about stuff in the tower

As a gamer what would be the smartest thing to do?

    thanks

It depends on how much you want to spend, personally, I'd upgrade to an Athlon X2, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS, Asus M2N-E mobo, and leave the builtin sound card.

there will always be something around the corner, check out the 8800gt, their new mid grade card

performance equal to a 640mb GTS for around $250

and for the rest of the machine, as said, get a core2duo or quad, a gigabyte or asus mobo, and a couple gigs of RAM

can be easily done for $800

My mobo is already asus and I already have 2 gigs of ram.

    I have a 7900gtx 512mb videocard, would the 8800gt perform better?

Also I just read this post again, what model ASUS board do you have?

because Pentium dual cores did use LGA 775 sockets, but only had 800mhz FSB, and if thats all your mobo is designed for you would mostly likely need to upgrade anyway, as new procs run at 1066 or even 1333mhz
