ive had my dslr (nikon d40) for 2 years now and i barely ever use it.. bought it because i went on vacation and all my pics sucked, looked like regular point & shoot camera pics :o i never bothered to learn how to really use it, and have always used it in auto mode.

i want to start using it like it's meant to be used but dont know where to start learning. do you guys think it's worth it to take the intro to photography class at the local college? or should i look to take a class somewhere else (not college)?

here's the description of the class:
it'll be around $80 to take the class, including college registration fees. it's once a week for 3 hours from mid feb to mid june

If you've got the time and the money, then go for it. You could also pick up a book like Peterson's Understanding Exposure if you'd rather teach yourself.

why should it even be a question?

you had a dslr for 2 years and you are still contemplating on taking a class?

Do it. You get to see work that you wouldnt proactively look for on your own. That's one of the biggest things I get from going to school for photo, influences.

Shutter speed controls exposure and motion

Aperture controls depth of field and exposure

ISO is film sensitivity. Higher number = more sensitive

Rule of thirds, ansel adams, antiquated photo advice

Problem solved. You can paypal me the money you saved.
