Sorry for the n00b question - I did search but I didn't find what I was looking for (OT search does suck though and I also suck at using it).

Anyway - I just started going back to the gym and I have a question about lifting when you're sore.

Obviously, the first few times working an area of the body are going to kill me in terms of being sore since I haven't been for a few years.

Once I get back into it I know the answer will be different but I'm just starting so I'm afraid of doing damage if I push too hard (I still have old injuries that flare up every once in a while).

For example, last week I worked out my chest for the first time since coming back and I was sore as fuck for 3 days - I could barely lay there without feeling like shit. So I took a couple of days off - was that right or should I have soldiered through it after 1 day off?

    TIA.

I would have worked through it but taken it a little bit easier on the next muscle group.

I've read it's recommended to do a full body routine and use a rep scheme of 2x12 for most shit but a lot of people start and do more than that so I don't really see an issue.

IMO you should just push through it.

I would go with this. It's not BAD to wait til you feel a bit better, but push through it if you can.

Also make sure you're getting good sleep, calories, and protein after you workout. This will all help your DOMS.

if you are just now getting back to lifting, you should probably avoid doing a body part split where you hit a specific muscle group. You should be doing total body work, or mabey an upper/lower split.

    Mon - total body weights
    Tue - cardio
    Wed - total body weights
    thur - cardio
    friday - total body weights

    or

    mon - lower body
    tues - upper body
    wed - cardio
    thur - lower
    fri - upper

but besides all that bullshit, you should push through the soreness no matter what. Maybe one day off if you're REALLY DYING but it's unlikely you need it. If getting ripped was easy and pain free, everybody would be Timberwolf.

work thru it but maybe go lighter.

when i am away for a long time and get back into it, i remember to not push myself as hard the first time so i can still use my muscles in two days.

    doms suxorz.

Thanks all - I was just wondering because I have just started working out again.

When I used to work out daily I would have just pushed through it but since I just started I didn't know if that was a good idea or not (or maybe I was just lazy and this was my excuse).

Anyway, thanks and I'll push next time.

I have it broken down pretty well but I think I went a little too hard on my first run through - I mean my chest was sore from the chest workout but so were my arms and shoulders - I could hardly move them :o

yeah you should just go and keep at it if your too sore for a good workout do at least a lighter one cause that helped me get the soreness out after taking time off after an injury
