    My current line up:

    -Nikon D50
    -Fuji S3 Pro
    -Nikkor 18-200mm VR
    -Nikkor 105mm VR macro
    -Nikkor 35mm f/2
    -Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
    -Sigma 10-20mm
    -Nikon SB-80DX flash
    -Nikon SB-400 flash

    Heavily considering:

    -Canon 30D
    -Canon 10-22mm
    -Canon 17-40L
    -Canon 70-200L IS
    -Canon 300L IS

    Reasons for staying with Nikon:
    1. Ergonomics
    2. I prefer the Nikon color palate for landscapes
    3. I LOVE Fuji color/skin tone for portraits (Nikon or Canon can't touch it :nono:)
    4. Stick with what I already have
    5. CCD sensor sensitive to Infrared photography

    Reasons for going to Canon:
    1. L-series lenses
    2. Better features on lenses and CHEAPER to Nikon counterparts
    3. Cool factor for white lenses :wiggle:
    4. Just want something new :dunno:

Part of my frustration is that Nikon have lenses geared toward either beginners (f/3.5-5.6) or professionals (constant f/2.8). Canon seems to be more willing to address the market for advanced amateurs with their f/4 lens offerings at very tempting and certainly more attainable prices. Photography is a hobby (with occasional weddings where I insist only in being the backup photographer). I don't NEED big, bulky f/2.8's and sure as hell won't pay for them. But Nikon's quality is reserved only for those lenses.

    Suggestions? :noes:

If you're not going to get a 1 series soon, I'd get the Tamron 17-50 over the canon 17-40.

Plus, do you not plan on buying a new flash?

I would get the 24-70L over the 17-40L. Its faster plus you dont need it anywider since u got the 10-22. Huge switch though. I approve

Edit: read the rest of your post and saw you didnt want to spend the extra$$ for 2.8

S5 ftw. I'd atleast wait until the next gen comes in. no point selling off and switching to out dated gear now.

    L series :ugh:
white? nikon has some white glass too? Ask Matt

Obviously I'm a Canon guy, but I wouldn't make that switch, atleast not yet. Especially with the S5 available.

Wouldn't it cost less to pick up some additional Nikon 2.8 glass rather than go through the hassle of selling all your stuff off and buying all new Canon gear?

Since one of your issues is the cost of "pro" Nikon glass, then cost must be a factor.

    So what Nikon glass do you want anyways? 70-200 f2.8? 17-55 f2.8? 12-24 f4?
Those three lenses plus what you already have pretty much covers it. You don't even need the 12-24 since you already have the 10-22. That leaves 2 lenses to get.

And 80-200 f2.8 are pretty cheap now and subs for the 70-200 pretty well.

So if money is a problem, this is the cheaper road.

But if you just want to change ... go ahead. I'll take the 105 Micro off your hands.

sell s3 and d50, and get an S5.

sell 18-200 and 105. and replace with 80-200 or 70-200.

add in a 17-50 tammy for general shooting and i think you would be a lot happier.

I played with an S5 yesterday, it's really nice. Lots of detail and very good colour, but it's slow as fuck.

I'd stick with what you have, which is a pretty good setup!

I think you have plenty of good lenses

You should ship me your 50mm and 35mm.

Honestly... At this point, Nikon and Canon are almost identical. The only thing that separates them is the lens mount...

If you look at the different 'classes' of cameras, they're all fairly similar. One may have a particular area of advantage, but the other will have an advantage somewhere else.

Going from a D50 to a 20/30D is an upgrade NOT because of the switch to a new company, but it's a class upgrade. I can guarantee that if you went from that D50 to a 350 or 400D, you would not be as impressed. Also, if you went from that D50 to a D80 or D200, you would still be upgrading in class, and would be just as happy.

I was a Minolta film user, so when I made the switch to digital I had the option of going either Nikon or Canon.

I went Nikon, because I liked the ergonomics, and the camera just *felt* right.

But would my pictures be any different if I went Canon? No. Prolly not.

    They'd still suck.

Stay with Nikon. I heart mine. You just need to get some nikon 2.8 glass and you won't be sorry.
    Otherwise

Third party 2.8's are pretty good
    sigma 70-200
    tamron 17-50
    Nikon has a 300 f/4 that is decently priced (350 for AF-d)

You're reasons for possibly switching appear to be fanboi in nature. Allow me to explain:

    1. Nikon makes lenses that are every bit as capable as Canon L lenses, they just don't give them special markings like red rings to help show off your cock size. In fact, many Nikon lenses make Canon L glass look like shit.
    2. Nikon lenses actually tend to be cheaper than Canon counterparts, and if current Nikon glass isn't fitting your needs there are about 1000 older F mount lenses that still work with current bodies and can be bought for almost nothing on ebay. Canon, you are limited to EF lenses.
    3. Don't be a sackrider, this is no reason to switch. If you really need white lenses, buy Nikon Euro/Jap market glass. They're white.
    4. Buy a D200 and stfu. :dunno:

I shoot mainly weddings, and when I compare my images to my lead photographer who has a 30D and a 20D, my images are close, but the Nikon has more color pop - it seems like the Canon is more flat and netural with the colors. I have considered going to Canon, but I just bought a "pro" lens, and I don't think I will be going to Canon now. I really want to get a D200, and use the D50 for higher iso shots - as it has lower noise than the rest of the Nikon cameras...

It is true that Nikon costs more...a D200 is more expensive than a 5D body, which is foolframe. :hs:

I have yet to understand the cool factor of a full frame.

And btw, you can get a d200 for 1400. Last time I checked the 5d was additional 600-1k over the d200. As far as that arguement that canon = more money its not entirely true for body or lenses. Both 70-200's with IS/VR are the same price. The 24-70 and the 28-70 are about the same price.

From the reasons you listed, it looks like you are switching based on wants rather than needs. From utility stand point, I say no. But if switching to Canon will make you happy, enough to outweigh all the effort/time you need to pour into selling all that gear and buying new gears and losing money in the process, then I say go for it.

What do Nikon shooters do when they graduate from body to body to body and reach the top of the Nikon line? Do they switch to Canon? (not being sarcastic; serious question)
