    So my detailer called me and made me an offer...

    Being that I'm at my high year tenure, I initially decided to get out. I'm at 20 years and wanted to pick up E7 but things just didn't go my way.

    The detailer tells me that he can keep me on active duty for a year or more, take a billet (Camp Pendleton 1st MARDIV) being that he needs someone there yesterday.

    I'm completely torn.

    I had my heart set on getting out but this could give me the chance at picking up E7. It also means a tour in Iraq too.

    going in the reserves will give you E7 as well... something to consider.

    Do you have anything lined up after retirement? Also, I would think a company that knows anything about the military is going to want a 20+year E7 a whole lot more than a 20 year E6.

    If you were just going to sit on your ass when you got out go for it. Good chunk of tax free before you finally get out.

    I'm already at 20 years. So I won't be signing up with the reserves.

    Yes. My goal was to at least get Chief before I retired.

    Due to circumstances beyond my control, my test was invalidated and I was ready to leave.

    Now, this comes up. It seems like a chance to actually make it, do some good and end my career the way I wanted to.

    Detailer = Monitor

    I thought if you picked up a SNCO rank you had to make an additional time commitment?

    So you can't pick up Chief and retire a month later

  9. What were your plans after the military? You are navy I assume? What would your tour in Iraq look like? Family? These are the questions I find myself asking if I were in your situation.

    You can make chief and retire the next day. Only thing that changes is he can stay in for 24 years after making chief.

    Stay in. You can get your promotion PLUS get another deployment under your belt. Meaning several months of tax-free income which is always a good thing to have right before retirement.
