So i'm itching to learn something new.

Have been playing with PHP for a few years, on and off, but never anything too serious.. some basic database apps etc and a lot of hacking opensource packages.. but my job mostly has me doing the design and content side of the web rather than serious developing..

I want to be able to write my own apps, simple stuff really, like basic CMS's, database driven directories (real estate, restaurant menus, that sorta stuff).. your typical "web2.0" (hate that phrase) type apps with a simple purpose customized for the client..

Is rails the way to go these days? Or continue with just PHP/MySQL development?

Why not continue deeper into MySQL/PHP and learn concepts you don't already know, then branch out?

Yeah, after spending the afternoon googling rails and other such stuff, i'm thinking I might just do that..

I just didn't know if there was something I was missing in all these shiney apps.. eg a framework or language everyone uses :p

    Cool thanks guys.

Will setup a little dev server and at least have a play with it..

I think I need to get me some books. I hate learning from books, but the commute to/from work is wasted time at the moment.

Or a netbook with LAMP + some ebooks :p

    its not hard to learn.

Model = where your entity logic goes ( getters and Setters for database objects )
View = presentation layer .. HTML mixed with rails
controller = where your rubyrails code goes.

that picture takes up 2/3's of the width. wtf. ( on my shitty school res.)

okay, maybe I exaggerated, but still. large and in charge. I feel like I am at an Audi fanboy site rather than a Rails blog.
