Reason for me asking is that I've been training ground for about a year now, but not with real formal instruction. I pretty much just roll no gi. I've had about 4 classes on technique with gi. Technically I would be a Beginner, but my skill level could be at Novice because of my lack of formal instruction.

I want to be competitive but not outclassed.

Should I just register under Novice at this event, then go with Beginner at my next NAGA?

We leave tomorrow afternoon for Rhode Island. Fight is saturday.

I'm fucking excited  and I may do both gi and no-gi for the experience.

Compete at Novice. If you do well, do beginner also

That's what I don't get...I can join different classes for free, but I have to pay to fight different divisions right?

My cardio is really good now, and I think I can handle fighting multiple classes.

There are so many sandbaggers at NAGA - just go with the lower bracket. Everyone wants to win and have it on your resume so you have douches like Sylva who've been training for 6 years who show at novice/white belt because they don't technically have a belt..

1 year = beginners. The experience is better than the medal.

Why not sandbag? That's all everyone does.

1 year of informal "MMA training" =! 1 year of BJJ.. People who train at a BJJ academy 4-5 days a week (especially in a Gi) for one year aren't even close to the same level..

If he goes into Beginner at NAGA (Sandbaggers Anonymous) - he'll get one match in.

yeah, you might as well sand bag because every one else is doing it, IMO it sucks because you cant get good experience in because every one is cheating in one way or the other.

Anyone who wins a division at a NAGA gets put on the sandbagger list and goes automatically into the next division at the next NAGA. problem is we only have NAGA records so it's not perfect.

just do the novice. rolling in training is a whole different experience when points are involved.

but then again if you lose in the first round of beginner, it wont feel as bad as losing in the first round of novice.

either way, good luck homie. learn lots and do your thing on the mat.

I will introduce NAGA to the new hotness known as the flying gogoplata

    It came from waximaize amirite?

    :squint: and you're fat

Exactly. My one year rolling is nowhere near someone who trains BJJ formally in the same time period. No offense taken at all.

I'm doing both gi and no-gi for experience.
