Just got back from a week of training at lovely Ft Indiantown Gap, PA. I talked to a senior NCO from a unit in the Pittsburgh area and he told me that they have an opening for a 25B E-5. There are no open E-5 slots in my until. The question becomes, my NG unit armory is 20 minutes away from my house. This other unit is 90 minutes. Think its worth it to change units to get the promotion or wait it out in my unit for an E-5 slot that may not come open for 6 months to a year?

I know a couple people in the unit. Some of them went to Louisiana with us. They used to be "battalion", but with the re-organization for the Stryker Brigade, we belong to somebody else now.

the big question that you need to answer is

    A. want more money
    B. want higher rank
    C. want to drive further

If you value the rank more than the other 2 then do it. the money will not be that much in the guard. The other thing is will you use the MOS to get more out of your civilian occupation? If not then why switch unless its for rank only

I want to move on in my military career. Right now I'm stonewalled in my current unit. No promotions in sight. There was going to be an E6 position opening, but its already being filled by somebody transferring to the unit. I can transfer back later on if I want to. Plus, I'm going on 8 years in and still an E4. I need to move on, no matter what it takes.

My civilian occupation has nothing to do with my MOS at this time.

I know a few guys in my unit drive 400-600 miles round trip to weekend drills. Crazy bastards.

I say go for it. The MOS is a real good one to have if you plan on any type of It job in future. And you'll get the rank you need. Only downside is the drive but its not that bad since your only doing it once a month. You could always get there and might find out that someone else is near you so that you can carpool on drill weekends

I think I am going to do it. Going to call the readiness NCO at the unit later this week. I need to get the ball rolling on this ASAP.
